The information below that might be helpful to you and your loving family. It is good information for Choosing the Right Assisted Living & taking care of disabled patients. It is good information to pass around to your friends and family. Feel free to mention our article to those that might need this vital information.
We all know about saving for college or retirement, but how many of us plan for when we - or our parents – or our neighbors - can no longer take care of ourselves?
It is no longer unspeakable!
I had a long talk with my mother. She is retired now.
Therefore, we are researching for effective ways to take care of her health and her well-being.
Re: Long term healthcare:
You can opt to hire a caregiver instead of using nursing homes. Information is available at www.caremanager.org through the National Association of Professional Geriatric Care
Managers, (nfcacares.org) at 1-800-896-3650. USA Government offers more information at THE ELDERCARE LOCATOR (ww.eldercare.gov) at 1-800-677-1116.
Allowing your elder parent(s) to remain at home instead of a nursing home involves teamwork with the entire family. It involves working with a caregiver around your work schedule and your family time.
I know of a neighbor nearing the stubborn age of 80 and he refuses to allow anyone to help him. He is finding it hard to take a shower, wash his clothes cook and drive. More yet, he refuses to allow his family to take him to the doctors for a yearly check up.
Not only is this becoming a health issue to my neighbor but a safety factor. Woo! Someone must step up and take charge.
What to do next?
Talk to your family and friends and your family doctor for helpful tips to get the person healthcare. Allow the elder patient to know you are willing to do extra chores for them, drive them to doctor appointment and offer to help them with washing.
You might offer to ask them if they would like a part time companion. Suggest that by hiring a healthcare companion that they will be offering someone a chance to get employment. And a chance to enjoy spending time with them.
You can run an ad in the local newspaper.
1. Offer affordable wage (Perhaps a senior or college student would love this job)
2. Give them YOUR contact information.
3. Set the time needed that the patient will agree upon.
4. Request that the applicant have a valid drivers license, clean drivers record & is willing to drive the patient to doctors appointment, grocery store and hairdressers.
5. Request that the applicant have referrals.
6. Screen each reply
Of course, you must interview each applicant and follow up…
Re: Long term nursing home care
Long term nursing home care can be costly. Please research nursing home care costs and benefits before making discussions. Discuss this with your other family members and your family doctor.
Visit the nursing home unannounced for inspection. Approach other nursing home patient family members with important questions. Such as: Do they keep a clean environment? Do the nurses tend to the patients requests in a timing matter? Are you happy with the medical service here?

New law provides tax relief for inherited 401(k)s
People who inherit profit-sharing and 401(k) plans from someone other than their spouse now have the ability to transfer the retirement plan to an IRA without incurring a host of tax penalties. Soy Products In Infant Milk Is It Safe or What?
Robert Wood Johnson Medical School today announced the results of a study that shows giving a psyllium supplement to patients currently taking simvastatin 10 mg for lowering LDL cholesterol is as effective as taking a double-dose of simvastatin (20 mg) alone. Read more below.
Concerns about the dangers of soy have prompted consumer groups in New Zealand and Canada to call for a ban on the sale of soy infant formula. Milk-based formula contains a better protein profile and does not flood the infant with antinutrients and female hormones. Breast feeding is best IF the mother has consumed a healthy diet, one that is rich in animal proteins and fats, throughout her pregnancy and continues to do so while nursing her infant. Mothers who cannot breast feed, for whatever reason, should prepare homemade formula based on whole milk for their babies. The rare child allergic to whole milk formula should be given a whole foods meat-based formula, not one made of soy protein isolate. Parents who invest time in preparing homemade formula will be well rewarded with the joys of conferring robust good health on their children.

Beware of The Toxicity of Soy Products Infant Milk
Hundreds of epidemiological, clinical and laboratory studies link soy to malnutrition, digestive distress, thyroid dysfunction, cognitive decline, reproductive disorders, cognitive, immune system breakdown, and even heart disease and cancer.
Contrary to popular belief that soy is a health food, evidence reveals that soy consumption has been linked to numerous disorders, including infertility, increased cancer and infantile leukemia, Type1 diabetes, and precocious puberty in children have been fed soy formula. (early maturation, such as breast development and menstruation as early as 6 years of age). Scientists have known for years that the isoflavones in soy products can depress thyroid function and cause goiters in otherwise healthy children and adults.

New Study Shows Dietary Fiber Supplement Can Reduce Dose of Prescription Drug Needed to Treat High Cholesterol
Do you have high cholesterol and your diet is not working to help lower your LDL level?
Psyllium Offers Breakthrough in Treating Heart Disease with is the main ingredient in Metamucil
The 12-week study, which included a four-week diet stabilization period, comprised 67 patients with baseline LDL cholesterol ranging from 161 to 186 mg/dL. Patients were assigned one of three random treatment groups. One group received simvastatin 20 mg plus placebo; another simvastatin 10 mg plus placebo; and the third simvastatin 10 mg plus psyllium (Metamucil). Following eight weeks of treatment, the researchers found that patients taking psyllium supplementation had an additional six percent reduction in LDL cholesterol compared to those taking the 10 mg statin drug alone.
According to the American Heart Association, approximately 37 million adults have total cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher, which puts them at high risk for developing heart disease. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, cholesterol and other substances build up in the walls of the arteries. Over time, the build-up causes "hardening of the arteries" so that arteries become narrowed and blood flow to the heart is restricted. Blood carries oxygen to the heart, and if the flow is severely restricted, a heart attack could result.

Fiber does help lower your LDL level 9 {bad cholesterol).
Over the news studies are showing the some cholesterol medications can harm your liver. Some of these medications can be avoided if you can add watch your diet and add MORE FIBER to your diet. Founder of Swaphandmedowns Jane Sadowy, PHD.
