Online Colleges - a great option to earn that degree!
Earning your degree these days is both harder and easier than ever before. What do I mean?; The hectic pace of our culture makes it a bit harder to get started and stay on top of completing a college degree - while on the other hand, if you choose to get started, or return and finish a degree, you have many additional options that were simply not available just a short time ago. These options are of course online colleges and they can be a great way to further or complete an education and you can do so from the comfort of your living room or by taking a lap top to the Bahamas for example, and completing the entire program from the beach - all online.
So what do you need to know and perhaps "be watchful" for when choosing a program?
Tuition costs and fees
Though costs are beginning to even out, many times the courses cost several times less than traditional colleges. More recently, some of the more popular online colleges are beginning to charge tuition that is the same as some physical campus colleges. When you are considering your options, take a look at online school review type sites. They have developed relationships with multiple schools and usually have all the information you need to compare one program to another.
Here's a caution for you: If you request information about an online college and then the school begins asking for a class ‘reservation fee’ or some other amount of money for anything other than tuition - it would be best to simply walk away from this prospect. There are schools that are basically known as "degree mills" - that in effect let you purchase a degree. They normally don’t have the licensure or accreditations to be offering degree programs. And even if they are fully accredited, no legitimate school worth attending is going to ask for money to reserve classes. Sure there are costs involved, but be cautious and understand clearly what they are asking you to pay for.
Are they for real?
Obviously football and basketball games won't be part of your experience, and actually there are other more important considerations - such as is the school legitimate? Do they have accreditation? Take the time before you enroll in an online college to research the school. Though many online colleges are legitimate programs, unfortunately some of them are not. The bad news is that if you do not do some research beforehand, you may end up in a program that will provide you with a degree that isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on. Be sure you don’t end up wasting your time and money. While it’s hard to choose between colleges it's worth the time. The good news is that essentially every major state (and many private) colleges and universities have online programs associated with their regular degree programs. Although, you'll still want to be sure that they offer you the best for what you want to accomplish.
Don’t listen to the college hype
Another exhortation? All schools want you to attend their program, and they earn money when you do. Once again, do your research on what you want in a college, and determine if the school can deliver what you need? Sure their website looks awesome, why wouldn’t it? And yes, their claims of excellence sound top tier, but can they be verified? Remember, they are trying to get your business, and that's fine if they can deliver the program you need. So again, before enrolling in an online college, do the research necessary to set aside any concerns. Take the time to know the process and steps an earning the degree. How long will it take to earn your degree? Do you need to spend anytime on campus (labs for science etc)?
Not all degrees leading to a career are ideally suited for online programs. As mentioned above, some on-campus time may be needed. It’s up to you to find out if your career plans match up well with an online college. If attending classes online works out for you it can be a very convenient situation. As well as being able to do your work wherever you have an internet connection, many times you can complete projects and other assignments with greater deadline freedom than with traditional colleges.
Time Management
Time management seems to be a lost art these days. It's important in every aspect of life and taking online classes will remind you of its importance. Online college is not for you if you have trouble managing your own time. Online classes may still has class times at which you must be online to participate in class discussion, although often these assignments are not "live." Some classes will require logging on and participating in the chat room at a specific time, but not all. In many respects, your experience will resemble traditional college. If can manage your time and prioritize, then online college may be a perfect fit for you.
Conclusion: Online classes may not be for everyone, but they can be a great choice. The convenience of online classes is a huge benefit, but like all things in life, take the time to know what is best and where it's best for you. And in doing so, you'll assure your choice to be a wise one. .
